Opportunity knocks

There will be an abundance of opportunities for ports, energy suppliers and energy buyers at the inaugural Bunkering & Sustainability Forum: Tenerife in March 2026.

The event will give island and mid-sized ports the chance to see and hear what ports of a similar size are doing to prepare themselves for the maritime energy transition…

It will provide bunker and alternative energy suppliers with potential options to expand into existing markets or to explore new niche business sectors.

And it will give bunker buyers a great opportunity to find out what fuels are available in these ports now as well as planned for the future, with the prospect of collaborating with those ports to ensure that future offerings match their future requirements.

Key to #BASF26 is the close collaboration that the event aims to generate between ports, fuel suppliers and buyers, and regulators, to break down the infrastructure, regulatory, financial and other barriers that might be holding them back and impeding the energy transition.

A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to conventional and new energy sources is not workable for all ports. They may not have a local fuel supply source so must import 100% of the fuel that they need, and while storage and delivery facilities are generally available for traditional fuels, this cannot yet be said for new fuels such as LNG, methanol, biofuels and ammonia.

So, as demand increases for these fuels, islands and smaller ports must plan carefully to secure fuels for ships without wasting time and money on energy sources that may not be required or economically viable.

The event is hosted by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and aims to bring together similar bunkering hubs from around the world to share their experiences and discuss future marine fuel supply challenges and opportunities.

Alternative Fuels Training Course
