Nine months into operations, Seascale Energy continues to gain strong momentum as a marine fuel procurement platform built on scale and transparency in the bunker industry. Launched in May 2025 as a joint venture between Cargill’s Pure Marine Fuels (PMF) and the Hafnia Bunker Alliance, Seascale was established to bring a more efficient and future-ready approach to bunker procurement.

The first nine months of operations have demonstrated clear progress across customer growth, operational performance and capability development.

Growing with the market

Since launching, Seascale Energy has continued to build trust and relevance within the shipping community. All previous members of both Bunker Alliances have now signed on to continue their fuel procurement activities with Seascale Energy.

The customer base has also expanded. Eight new customers have been onboarded since launch, bringing Seascale’s total membership to 53 customers. This growing scale has also enabled Seascale to engage in a broader range of contracts across more locations, unlocking commercial opportunities via collective volume and reach.

Streamlining claims and improving outcomes

Streamlining bunker claims management has been a key early focus for Seascale Energy. Through harmonized processes, closer supplier collaboration and improved data handling, Seascale has delivered encouraging early results for its members.

Compared to pre-Seascale operations, the number of claims raised has reduced by approximately 35%, reflecting improved operational and post-delivery alignment. In parallel, Seascale has achieved a 75.6% claim collection ratio, supporting more efficient settlement outcomes.

The financial impact of unresolved claims has remained minimal. On average, the net USD value not collected is USD 0.08 per metric tonne, representing the difference between final claim amounts and settlements, and demonstrates Seascale’s disciplined approach to downside management.
While claims performance naturally varies across markets and time periods, these early indicators suggest that Seascale’s structured model is delivering tangible benefits. The model is designed to improve operational efficiency upstream, reducing the likelihood of claims and disputes in the first place, while maintaining a balanced and fair approach to both clients and suppliers in pursuit of equitable outcomes.

Building capabilities for changing fuel landscapes

Beyond traditional fuel procurement, Seascale has expanded its capabilities in response to regulatory change and the energy transition.

During the first nine months, the team facilitated several purchases of LNG, biofuels in various blends (B4-B100), even also green methanol for one of its customers. This marks an important milestone for the new world order and capabilities within Seascale to support members with both conventional fuels and emerging low- and zero-carbon alternatives.

To strengthen expertise further, Seascale has partnered with Lloyd’s Register, which will provide ongoing annual support on low-carbon fuels and evolving regulatory frameworks, reinforcing Seascale’s commitment to credible technical guidance.

Active industry voice

Seascale has established an active presence across the maritime community, participating in eight industry events and contributing as speakers on five occasions. The team has also delivered five customer webinars on key regulatory topics, including EU maritime fuel regulations and RED III.

Seascale is also proud to be among the founding members of the Bunker Services Initiative (BSI) in the ARA region, supporting collaborative efforts to strengthen operational standards and best practices in marine fuel services.

Looking ahead

The first nine months of Seascale Energy have focused on building strong foundations: customer trust, supplier scale, disciplined processes and the expertise needed to navigate a changing fuel landscape.

As Seascale enters its next phase, the focus remains on delivering value through scale and collaborative transparency, while expanding capabilities that help members prepare for the future of marine fuels.
