When the ferry M/S Finlandia required an urgent repair of its stabiliser fin due to corrosion damage, MarineShaft – a Danish specialist in repair of rudder and propulsion equipment – was hired to carry out the repair.

Repair solution

The stabilizer fin showed significant corrosion damage on the seal liner journal. To meet a tight repair schedule, the most efficient repair solution was to machine the stabilizer fin shaft to remove the corrosion and installing a sleeve.

As MarineShaft keeps a large stock of certified raw materials, urgent manufacturing requests can be met without delay, which was very important in this case.

The stabiliser fin was sent to MarineShaft’s workshop, where the scope of work included:

• Machining of the corroded areas of the stabilizer seal liner journal on the stabilizer fin
• Manufacture of a stainless-steel sleeve and shrink-fitting it onto the stabilizer fin
• Manufacture of a new gland ring for the sealing box housing
• Laser cladding of the machined gland ring using Inconel 625 to ensure optimal corrosion resistance
• Final machining of the seal liner journal to the specified dimensions

In addition, the client supplied composite material for new hinge sleeves, which MarineShaft machined and installed as part of the repair.

MarineShaft specialises in emergency repairs, and within just four working days the stabiliser fin was fully repaired and returned to the customer with class approval from Bureau Veritas.
