HD Hyundai announced on Jan. 29 that Chairman Jung and Kim Hyung-kwan, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, attended the Global Energy Leaders Roundtable held the previous day at the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi, India, at Modi’s invitation.

The roundtable was held as part of India Energy Week 2026. A total of about 30 people participated, including Modi, ministers from relevant Indian government departments, representatives of state-owned enterprises, and global corporate CEOs.

At this meeting, Chung expressed gratitude for Modi’s will and efforts to foster the shipbuilding industry. He also requested continued interest and support for the cooperation projects with India that HD Hyundai is pursuing.

He said, “HD Hyundai continues to maintain close cooperative relationships with India in various fields,” adding, “India is the core of our overseas production base diversification strategy, and I am confident that it will become HD Hyundai’s new growth engine.”

HD Hyundai signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cochin Shipyard, India’s largest state-owned shipbuilder, in July last year to participate in the “Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047” project that the Indian government is strategically pursuing, and agreed to promote cooperation in various aspects including design and procurement support and productivity improvement.

Recently, it expanded the scope of cooperation with Cochin Shipyard to naval vessels and signed an exclusive business agreement on joint shipyard construction with the Tamil Nadu state government of India. Furthermore, it is accelerating its entry into the Indian market by pursuing crane business cooperation with state-owned BEML and other initiatives.

From India, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri visited Korea in November last year, and Tamil Nadu State Minister of Industries Raja visited in January this year. They toured HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard to explore ways to strengthen cooperation.
