The agreement was signed at the North Sea Summit in Hamburg on 26 January. For Energinet and our German TSO partner in the project, 50Hertz, the agreement provides greater clarity on the political and economic framework for planning and coordination across the border – an important foundation for the continued work on Bornholm Energy Island.

“The agreement is an important step in translating political ambitions into concrete projects and establishing clear frameworks for large-scale energy infrastructure projects. Energinet and 50Hertz have a long-standing cross-border cooperation. Together, we have, among other things, delivered the world’s first hybrid interconnector, Kriegers Flak, in the Baltic Sea. We will bring these experiences into the continued work on Bornholm Energy Island and the integration of offshore wind into the power system.”

In September 2025, Energinet received approval from the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities to continue the work on Bornholm Energy Island. This approval was granted in parallel with political negotiations between Denmark and Germany on the economic framework for Bornholm Energy Island, including the allocation of costs. These negotiations have now concluded with the signing of the agreement. The Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard, will convene the political parties behind the previous agreements on Bornholm Energy Island as soon as possible in order to seek their support for the next steps in the process.

Energinet continues its work on technical preparations and regulatory processes in close cooperation with 50Hertz.

Bornholm Energy Island will receive power from future offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea. On Bornholm, the voltage level will be increased to 525 kV, after which the electricity will be distributed to consumers in Denmark and Germany via subsea and onshore cables. The power connection between Bornholm and Germany will have a capacity of 2 GW, while the connection to Zealand will have a capacity of 1.2 GW.

Through separate tenders, Energinet and 50Hertz have awarded the cable contracts to the Danish company NKT, while Siemens Energy has been selected to deliver and construct the substations for the project.
