Korea’s largest offshore wind power project, the Nakwol Offshore Wind Farm in South Jeolla Province, has commenced its first partial commercial operation. The Nakwol Offshore Wind Farm project team plans to install a total of 64 offshore wind power generators by June next year and sequentially implement commercial power generation.

On Dec. 10, Nakwol Blue Heart, the implementation company of the Nakwol Offshore Wind Farm, announced that it completed the sealing of the substation’s meter on Dec. 2 and received the initial power trading commencement approval confirmation from the Korea Power Exchange, starting commercial power generation of the first unit. This represents an achievement approximately 2 years after being selected in the competitive bidding in December 2023 and breaking ground in March 2024.

The Nakwol Offshore Wind Farm is a project to install 64 offshore wind power generators of 5.7 megawatt (MW) scale in the waters near Songi Island in Nakwol-myeon, Yeonggwang County, South Jeolla Province, with a total power generation capacity reaching 364.8 MW. This is a project that exceeds the entire scale (352 MW) of offshore wind power generation complexes currently operating in Korea, and the Nakwol Offshore Wind Farm is also Korea’s first large-scale single offshore wind power generation project of over 300 MW. More than 100 domestic companies including GS E&C, Taihan Cable & Solution, LS ELECTRIC, Samhae E&C, and Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries are participating in its installation and operation.

A representative from Nakwol Blue Heart stated, “As of the end of last month, the installation of 7 turbines has been completed, and starting with this first unit, we plan to sequentially install 64 offshore wind power generators and implement commercial power generation by June next year,” adding, “When finally completed next year, Korea’s offshore wind power generation capacity will expand to approximately double the current level.” The implementation company expects that upon completion of the Nakwol Offshore Wind Farm, it will be able to reduce approximately 430,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually and produce approximately 900 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity. 900 GWh is a scale that can supply electricity to approximately 250,000 households for one year.
