Samsung Heavy Industries Launches Autonomous Navigation Remote Operation Center

SROC is the first state-of-the-art smart ship operation technology established through collaboration between a shipbuilding company and a shipping company. Through the center, Evergreen plans to increase the number of vessels capable of efficient equipment inspection and maintenance by monitoring in real-time the information and status of key equipment on ships equipped with autonomous navigation systems.

Evergreen, in collaboration with Samsung Heavy Industries, successfully completed a demonstration this year by installing an autonomous navigation system on a 15,000 TEU (1 TEU is one 20-foot container) container vessel on a 10,000-kilometer route from Oakland, USA to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The two companies completed functional testing of remote monitoring support technologies including real-time ship automation systems, condition-based maintenance, and ship video information.

The two companies plan to expand the scope of technology development cooperation to areas such as remote periodic inspection, taking advantage of the SROC launch.

Choi Jong-woong, head of Samsung Heavy Industries Autonomous Navigation Research Center, said, “The launch of SROC will serve as a second bridge that supports safe navigation and emergency response during the digital transformation process of ships,” adding, “Through this, we expect K-shipbuilding to lead remote autonomous navigation technology and contribute to the establishment of international standards.”
