Not for profit organisation Megawatt, which specialises in raising energy literacy via play, received £12,000 to run three workshops in Norfolk schools educating young people about energy systems.  Funded via Hornsea 3’s Community Benefit Fund the workshops took place at Alderman Peel High School in Wells Next The Sea, East Norfolk College and Framingham High School.

At Alderman Peel, 60 Year 7 students had the chance to research renewable and non-renewable power sources, including gas, coal, nuclear, hydro, solar and wind. They discussed the pros and cons of each source and made their own posters detailing the different types.

The students were then introduced to the Megawatt card game. The goal of the game is to be the player who builds the electricity grid with the largest power output and the lowest environmental impact. To make it as exciting as possible, the card game throws real-life challenges at players that they have to deal with – from price hikes and environmental disasters to political events.

Megawatt founder Miguel Trenkel-Lopez said: “We want to get young people inspired and aware of the opportunities in the energy sector.”

Rafe, a student who took part in the workshop said: “I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I think it was really fun.”

Holly, another student, said: “I found that there are lots of different types of energy, and we shouldn’t take all the energy for granted.”
