Wärtsilä continues growth in the data center segment with a 507 MW order in the US, offering engines as a reliable power solution

Technology group Wärtsilä continues its growth in power supply for data centers and will deliver 27 engines to provide continuous primary power for a new data center under construction in the United States. The onsite power facility will operate with 27 Wärtsilä 50SG flexible engines with a power of 507 MW. The engines will run on natural gas and can be converted to run on sustainable fuels in the future. The equipment will be delivered in 2027. The order was booked in Wärtsilä’s order intake in Q4 2025.
Data centers are essential to the development of today’s digital economy, but they demand substantial amounts of power with high requirements on uptime and reliability. Access to consistent and reliable power from the grid is not guaranteed, as conventional supply systems often struggle with capacity constraints, inefficiencies and insufficient stability. Therefore, many data center developers are turning to off-grid power solutions including a primary power source, like an engine power plant, to ensure faster access to reliable power.
Wärtsilä’s engines were chosen ahead of other competing technologies for a variety of reasons including their ability to operate at full capacity even in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius). Wärtsilä is also able to guarantee low plant emissions. This, coupled with the leading fuel efficiency of Wärtsilä engines, allows the customer to reach their sustainability targets.
“Our off-grid solutions eliminate lengthy grid connection delays, and also provide many other intrinsic benefits. Wärtsilä’s modular engine power plants ensure high power availability even during maintenance and they ramp up quickly to meet fluctuating power demands. The plants scale up in capacity fast as data centers grow and operate efficiently also in the most demanding environments, using significantly less fuel and water than other technologies. These strengths make Wärtsilä’s solutions an ideal choice for cost-effective, resilient and future-ready data centers,” says Anders Lindberg, President of Wärtsilä Energy and Executive Vice President of Wärtsilä.
Wärtsilä currently has a global footprint of 79 GW with 6 GW and around 80 power plants in the United States alone. As noted in our Q3 2025 report, the data center market offers further growth opportunities in the US. The US is expected to be the global leader in data center growth by 2030. As energy demand is growing rapidly, customers and the market in the US are increasingly realising the benefits of flexible generation technologies – engine technology and energy storage – to provide affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.
