The deployment of Floating Nuclear Power Plants (FNPP) in the Mediterranean Sea is a step closer following a meeting in Athens of industry leaders, CORE POWER, ABS Hellas and Athlos Energy, to establish a PESTLE framework looking at the political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental considerations when siting nuclear reactors at sea.

The main areas of discussion at the ABS Hellenic Training Centre, were around political leadership and public engagement as key enablers supported by economic opportunity, technological readiness and favourable legal pathways. Attendees also highlighted positive statements made by Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, about how nuclear energy might be included in the National Energy and Climate Plan by 2027.

On completion of the PESTLE work, a report will be published by the Deon Policy Institute, and a supplementary paper will be published on the deployment of FNPPs in other Mediterranean countries.

The group is also looking at building a legal pathway for international nuclear governance and authorisation and ensuring Greece is prepared technically and institutionally for FNPP deployment.
