Samsung Heavy Industries and Amogy announced on Nov. 10 that they have signed a strategic cooperation agreement for domestic manufacturing and production of ammonia powerpacks.

The ammonia powerpack is a device capable of generating electricity using hydrogen extracted from ammonia, representing a carbon-free eco-friendly power generation system that can be applied to marine generators as well as onshore generators for use as a clean power source.

Samsung Heavy Industries has been conducting consultations through task force activities since signing a contract with Amogy in February this year for the development of next-generation ammonia-based power generation systems for ships.

Through this strategic agreement, Samsung Heavy Industries will hold exclusive domestic contract manufacturing rights for Amogy products for a minimum of three years, and has agreed to cooperate in mass production and optimization of not only marine products but also Amogy’s onshore power generation cracking modules.

Samsung Heavy Industries plans to establish a dedicated task force (TF) to develop test methods, standards, and protocols for Amogy products, and to build manufacturing equipment, process management, and raw material supply chains.

To this end, the company plans to expand ammonia demonstration facilities within Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje Shipyard by the end of this year for active use in product production and verification, while beginning contract production from 2026.

Lee Ho-ki, director of Samsung Heavy Industries’ Eco-Friendly Research Center, stated, “We aim to contribute to the creation of an eco-friendly fuel ecosystem by leveraging Samsung Heavy Industries’ manufacturing capabilities in the scale-up process of startup companies,” and said, “We will continue to explore long-term cooperation plans with Amogy.”

Woo Sung-hoon, CEO of Amogy, expressed, “We are very pleased to collaborate more closely with Samsung Heavy Industries, which possesses world-class manufacturing and production technology,” and stated, “Through this cooperation, we expect to implement ammonia-based decarbonization technology in actual industrial sites and contribute together to decarbonization across both onshore and offshore sectors.”
