HD Hyundai will soon announce various measures to strengthen shipbuilding cooperation with the United States, Chung Ki-sun, the group’s chairman, said on Oct. 27.

Chung met with reporters at the “Future Tech Forum: Shipbuilding” during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit held at the Gyeongju Expo Park Cultural Center in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. He stated, “The U.S. side also recognizes HD Hyundai as the most well-prepared partner.”

Chung said that while U.S. President Trump’s visit to HD Hyundai’s Ulsan shipyard has not yet been confirmed, the company is already prepared. Some speculate that President Trump, during his visit to Korea, might tour HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard or Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje shipyard to strengthen shipbuilding cooperation.

Chung appeared as a keynote speaker at the Future Tech Forum: Shipbuilding, marking his first official appearance as HD Hyundai chairman since his promotion from vice chairman on Oct. 17. In his keynote address, he emphasized, “HD Hyundai has successfully built and delivered over 100 surface ships and submarines to navies worldwide, including Korea, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Peru. Based on this experience, we are ready to embark on a journey of innovation as a reliable partner in opening a new era of maritime renaissance for the United States.”

When asked about his impressions on taking office, Chung replied, “Since taking office, I’ve been busy visiting various people and coordinating HD Hyundai’s future plans. There were difficult times for the group, but we will work harder to find good opportunities going forward.”

He added, “The most important thing is for everyone to come together and move in one direction with combined strength. We will work hard, so please give us your support.”
