The Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) expresses its strong support for the joint statement by seven leading international maritime associations calling for the urgent adoption of the “Net-Zero Framework” (NZF) at the upcoming Extraordinary Session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), taking place 14–17 October. The statement is endorsed by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), European Shipowners (ECSA), Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA), International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), and the World Shipping Council (WSC).

Shipping, while recognised as one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise due to its global and complex nature, continues to uphold its climate commitments. The NZF provides the only viable pathway through a comprehensive, globally enforceable regulatory framework. As highlighted in the joint statement: “only global rules can decarbonise a global industry. Without such a framework, shipping risks a growing patchwork of unilateral regulations that would raise costs without effectively advancing decarbonisation”.

CSC fully aligns with this position and urges governments worldwide, to support Shipping, the backbone of 90% of global trade, in moving toward a sustainable, globally regulated future by adopting a framework that encourages the industry’s transition to net-zero emissions while ensuring a level playing field for all stakeholders.
