Avoiding Downtime: In-Situ Shaft Repair saves time and costs for container vessel

October 3, 2025

During a scheduled docking at a shipyard in Shanghai, a container vessel experienced damage to the aft bearing journal of its Ø785 mm tail shaft. The affected area measured 2310 mm in length, and a conventional repair would have required full shaft removal by cutting a large access hole in the vessel’s hull, leading to significant downtime and higher costs.

MarineShaft was contracted to carry out the repair using in-situ machining. By mobilizing a portable lathe directly to the vessel, MarineShaft’s specialists were able to machine approximately 1.5 mm from the damaged surface, restoring the aft bearing journal to optimal condition. The entire process was performed on-site in the engine room, eliminating the need for shaft removal and avoiding unnecessary delays.

With an extensive fleet of portable in-situ machining equipment, MarineShaft delivers fast and efficient repair solutions to the maritime industry. In this case, the repair was completed in just 10 days.

To ensure full reliability, MarineShaft’s engineers also supervised and assisted with the installation of the propeller shaft, intermediate shaft, and bearing units, securing correct alignment and smooth operation.

(By combining speed, precision, and technical know-how, MarineShaft demonstrated its ability to minimize downtime and provide shipowners and yards with cost-effective, complete solutions.)
