HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is expanding its footprint in the Southeast Asian naval market by engaging in ship order activities in Malaysia, following its efforts in the Philippines.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on Sept. 24 that it recently hosted the Maritime Capability and Cooperation Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This event was held in conjunction with the 3rd Korea-Malaysia Defense Industry Cooperation Seminar organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia.

The forum was attended by Chun Jung-soo, executive vice president of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Special Ship Business Division, along with officials from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), the Malaysian Ministry of Defense, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia, and representatives from the local industry.

At the forum, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries presented its vision to support the Malaysian Navy’s 15-to-5 Fleet Transformation Plan and emphasized its willingness to actively participate in future naval strategic projects. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries introduced its portfolio related to Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) Batch-III, Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS), and Multi-Purpose Command Platforms (MPCP), sharing key mission capabilities and examples of design applications and operational experiences that support these capabilities.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also explained its business approach, combining global top-tier shipbuilding technology with local participation through cooperation cases with Peru and the Philippines. The company also conveyed its commitment to contribute to the growth of Malaysia’s defense industry through technology transfer, industrial cooperation, and education and training.

The Royal Malaysian Navy plans to acquire Littoral Mission Ships Batch-III and Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS) over the next five years, with additional ship orders expected in line with the fleet transformation plan.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is pursuing a merger with HD Hyundai Mipo, which is expected to significantly enhance its special ship business capabilities and improve its ability to respond to future naval shipbuilding projects in Southeast Asia.

Chun stated, “We are very proud to introduce HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ advanced naval solutions to the Royal Malaysian Navy and the Ministry of Defense.” He emphasized, “We will actively support Malaysia’s modernization journey through a long-term partnership that combines proven designs, reliable performance, global know-how, and substantial local cooperation.”
