HD Hyundai is partnering with KT to introduce Starlink satellite service at shipbuilding sites. Through this, they plan to create a smart work environment, enhance worker safety, and improve overall working conditions in the shipyard.

HD Hyundai announced on Sept. 11 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KT and KT SAT for the utilization of Starlink and the promotion of AI-based work innovation.

Under this agreement, HD Hyundai will introduce and apply Starlink satellite service throughout the entire shipbuilding process. KT SAT will supply necessary equipment for satellite service use, such as Starlink antennas, while KT will support productivity improvement for HD Hyundai employees by linking its subsidiary’s AI technology.

Starlink satellite service, which is gaining attention as a next-generation communication technology, is a low Earth orbit satellite communication service that enables internet access anywhere in the world based on thousands of small satellites. It is operated by SpaceX, a leading U.S. space industry company. Using Starlink service allows stable access even in sea and mountainous areas where fiber optic cables and base stations are difficult to install.

HD Hyundai plans to establish a communication network inside ships under construction using Starlink satellite service to create a smart work environment. This will further enhance worker safety from unexpected situations or dangers that may occur during work.

Starlink satellite service will also be utilized in remote sea trials. Currently, when problems occur in communication shadow areas during sea trials, ships inefficiently operate by moving to territorial waters where communication is possible to take measures and resume trials. However, with Starlink, it becomes possible to transmit real-time data such as engine status remotely, regardless of time and place, enabling immediate action.

“The introduction of Starlink satellite service will significantly increase work safety and delivery reliability,” said Lee Tae-jin, executive vice president of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. He added, “We will continue to lead the global shipbuilding industry based on differentiated technology.”
