HJ Heavy Industries has successfully secured an order for container ships worth 640 billion won. The company announced on Sept. 9 that it has signed a contract with a shipowner in the Oceania region to build four 8,850 TEU  eco-friendly container ships.

The total contract value is 640 billion won, and the ships are scheduled to be delivered to the shipowner sequentially by the end of February 2028.

The ships ordered by HJ Heavy Industries this time are characterized by maximized fuel efficiency and container loading capacity. To comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s regulations on ship sulfur oxide emissions, they will be equipped with scrubbers, a desulfurization facility. The vessels will be built as methanol-ready ships capable of using methanol, an eco-friendly fuel, as propulsion power, enabling carbon-neutral operation.

Yoo Sang-chul, CEO of HJ Heavy Industries, said, “This contract is a case where an existing shipowner has continued with additional orders, satisfied with the delivery time, specifications, and quality. It once again proves that our company’s eco-friendly container ship technology is recognized in the global market.” He added, “We will repay the shipowner’s trust through the construction of eco-friendly, high-quality ships and adherence to delivery schedules.”
