Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., partnering with Taiwan’s leading engineering company CTCI, today announced the receipt of an order from Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC), a core member of the oil and chemicals major Formosa Plastics Group (FPG), for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of LNG tanks for the Mailiao LNG Terminal in Mailiao Industrial Complex, Yunlin County, Taiwan. The project is scheduled for completion in mid-2029.

The equipment for this order consists of two aboveground LNG storage tanks with a capacity of 160,000 m³ — each consisting of an inner tank built of cryogenic steel and an outer tank made from prestressed concrete*, separated by an insulating layer — together with auxiliary facilities such as LNG in-tank pumps and cryogenic piping. Mailiao LNG Terminal is the first in Taiwan to be constructed and operated by a private company, and this order relates to a key project driven by FPG that aims to shift from coal-fired to natural gas based electricity generation, and supply Taiwan Power Company (TPC) with electricity by the end of 2029.

The present order recognizes our track record of delivering LNG related facilities both to Japan and overseas and advanced technology in the cryogenics field, together with our efforts to provide energy infrastructure facilities for the transition to a decarbonized society.

With many years of experience of cryogenic tanks, we have been constructing LNG tanks since the 1980’s and have delivered over 70 cryogenic tanks in Japan and overseas. Also in Taiwan, Kawasaki has managed construction projects for CPC Corporation, including the Taichung LNG plant phase II expansion project and at the third LNG Receiving Terminal now under construction in Guanyin District, Taoyuan. Consistently available and offering power plants flexibility in operations, LNG continues to be in demand worldwide as a transitional energy source on the road to carbon neutrality.

Kawasaki Group applies cryogenic technologies developed for LNG applications to liquefied hydrogen, a material now attracting interest as a future energy source. To help achieve a carbon neutral society by 2050, we will continue to help building a sustainable energy infrastructure for both LNG and hydrogen.
