HD Hyundai announced on July 30 that it had signed a strategic memorandum of understanding  on July 28 with H-Line Shipping at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province. The collaboration includes HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Marine Solution, and Avikus, aiming to jointly develop AI-based technologies for autonomous and eco-friendly ships.

The MOU seeks to maximize vessel and fleet operational efficiency using AI technologies for autonomous navigation, engine automation, optimal routing, and cargo transport efficiency. Under the agreement, HD Hyundai and H-Line Shipping will develop AI solutions that minimize fuel consumption, enhance operational efficiency, and improve safety.

HD Hyundai will lead the integration and application of these technologies. The project will incorporate Avikus’s autonomous navigation system, HiNAS; HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s route optimization system, OceanWise; and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering’s AI-based cargo handling system, AI-CHS. H-Line Shipping will provide a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier for technology testing and validation.

The two companies aim to reduce costs across the entire lifecycle of a vessel from design and construction to operation and maintenance, while proactively responding to increasingly stringent environmental regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Their goal is to establish market leadership through early development of AI-based solutions.

Seo Ho-dong, executive vice president and chief operating officer of H-Line Shipping, commented, “The technology of AI-powered cargo transport along optimal routes will be a decisive factor in strengthening a shipping company’s competitiveness. We expect this collaboration will significantly enhance fleet operational efficiency and safety.”
