A major breakthrough for Ukraine’s maritime workforce is on its way, as the country prepares to launch a pilot scheme allowing remote processing of Seafarers’ Identity Documents.

The move is being hailed as a game changer by Danica Crewing Specialists for thousands of Ukrainian seafarers stranded abroad by war, bureaucracy, and logistical dead ends. A date has yet to be set for the scheme’s introduction, but it’s believed to be in the next few months.

For the first time, Ukrainian seafarers located abroad will be able to apply for or renew their national (Ukrainian) SID through a new remote centre in Warsaw, Poland.

This removes the need to return home for critical paperwork and cuts through red tape that has long jeopardised jobs and disrupted contracts.

Henrik Jensen, CEO of Danica Crewing Specialists, said: “Ukraine is showing leadership here. This is a practical solution to a very real problem and one that could inspire other flag states to modernise and support their seafarers more effectively.”

Danica Crewing Specialists, which manages large numbers of Ukrainian crew, described the move as a ‘transformational shift toward modern maritime services capable of unlocking continuity and security for the country’s workforce.’

Henrik added: “This is a long-overdue fix to a system that has cost seafarers work and income. Too often, outdated processes and paperwork gaps have forced Ukrainian crew off ships despite being willing and able to work. A remote option is not just convenient. It is essential to their livelihoods.”

The reform comes as many Ukrainian seafarers continue to support global trade under extraordinary pressure. They are often unable to return home and have limited access to government services.

Responsibility for issuing SIDs will shift from local port captains to the Maritime Administration. The new system will connect with Ukraine’s digital infrastructure to hopefully pave the way for a fully paperless certification process in future. Documents not collected within a defined period will be automatically invalidated.

This pilot scheme, while still being finalised, marks a clear departure from outdated systems toward agile and resilient crewing models that reflect the reality of modern shipping.
