The 3rd CSN Mediterranean Crewing Conference took place on 25 June 2025 in Athens, drawing a full house of international crewing professionals, HR leaders, shipowners, and technology providers. The conference—held in celebration of the Day of the Seafarer—focused on the theme “Empowering Seafarers: Innovations in Welfare, Training, and Digital Transformation.” Hosted at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, it was a day marked by practical insights, bold ideas, and a shared commitment to advancing the wellbeing and capability of seafarers.

The event opened with remarks from Adonis Violaris, Managing Director of Cyprus Shipping News, who welcomed attendees and set the scene for the day’s ambitious agenda. He underscored the publication’s commitment to creating meaningful, high-level platforms for dialogue on crewing challenges and innovation—noting that the conference had reached full capacity and maintained audience engagement until the very last session.

Henrik Jensen, CEO of Danica Crewing Specialists and chairman of the conference, introduced the key themes—welfare, competency development, and the evolving role of technology. He reminded participants that while tools and trends change, the human element remains central to maritime excellence. The opening session was further dignified by a welcome address from Ambassador Stavros Avgoustides of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens, who spoke about the enduring importance of the seafaring profession and Cyprus’s historical commitment to maritime development.

One of the early highlights was the presentation by Anna Pittalis, Commercial Director of Intergaz Ltd and President of WISTA Cyprus, who gave a passionate address on Championing Diversity and Inclusion. She stressed that diversity is not a checkbox but a strategic imperative, and outlined concrete steps companies can take—from inclusive recruitment to active mentorship—that can drive better performance and innovation on board.

Julien Ledoux from KVH Media Group followed with a presentation on Crew Wellbeing and Emerging Global Connectivity Options, showcasing how satellite networks and content services are not only enabling communication but also delivering structured wellness programming to seafarers at sea. In a related session, Capt. George Papanelopoulos of Cyprus Sea Lines gave a forward-thinking presentation on how welfare, skill development, and digitalisation must evolve together. He provided examples of how his company is using e-learning, gamification, and real-time feedback tools to ensure continuous development and morale across crews.

One of the most anticipated parts of the day was the panel discussion moderated by Zoe Morphitou, Sales Director EMEA at KVH Industries, on the challenges of implementing meaningful welfare programs onboard. Panelists included Capt. George Vlachos, Konstantinos Oikonomou, Amalia Marcou, Katerina Palla, and Capt. Papanelopoulos. The group highlighted that while budget, stigma, and logistics are common obstacles, companies that invest in designated welfare ambassadors, mental health support systems, and flexible programming are seeing higher retention and improved culture.

The next sessions began with an engaging on-stage spotlight interview between CSN’s Adonis Violaris and Stylianos Psillakis, Technical Director of Columbia Group. Psillakis provided insight into how Columbia is leveraging analytics and operational transparency to build a modern, tech-enabled crewing strategy. He spoke candidly about the balance between digital performance monitoring and empowering individuals, suggesting that technology must serve—not replace—the human factor.

This theme carried over into a series of tech-focused presentations, beginning with Chrysoula Vasiliki Patrikiou of Pyli Net, who demonstrated how their performance platform helps companies track everything from training compliance to fatigue indicators in real time. Aashish Puri, Chief Revenue Officer of Maritime Trainer, complemented this by outlining how training can become more effective and data-driven through modular learning, automated assessments, and integration with fleet operations.

In a panel discussion moderated by Henrik Jensen, the conversation turned to how companies can reconcile safety and compliance training requirements with the need to foster a positive and motivated workplace culture. Theophanis Theophanous, Capt. Vasiliki Ketse, Chrysoula Patrikiou, and Aashish Puri weighed in with ideas such as giving crews more ownership over their own training schedules, using gamified learning modules, and aligning performance incentives with safety culture. It was clear from the discussion that culture and compliance should not compete—they should reinforce each other.

A special moment of the conference was the charity ceremony supporting LifeLine Hellas, with Dr. Ioannis Patiniotis as the charity sponsor and Dr. Angeliki Margariti-Andrews accepted contributions on behalf of the organisation. The event helped bridge the values discussed throughout the day—compassion, human dignity, and social responsibility—with real-world action.

In his closing summary, Henrik Jensen drew together the key messages of the day. He emphasised that if we are to empower seafarers, we must prioritise their wellbeing, prepare them with forward-looking training, and connect them through meaningful technologies. He also reiterated the importance of working across silos—HR, operations, training, and IT—to create integrated strategies that benefit both people and performance.

Adonis Violaris concluded by thanking the participants, sponsors, moderators, and panelists, as well as the organising team behind CSN and the technical partners who ensured seamless event delivery. A final thank-you went to all attendees who remained engaged until the final remarks—a testament to the relevance and resonance of the topics discussed.

The 3rd CSN Mediterranean Crewing Conference succeeded not only in identifying challenges but also in offering a shared roadmap. With strong emphasis on diversity, digital integration, and the psychological and physical safety of seafarers, the conference made one thing clear: Empowering seafarers is not a future goal—it is a present priority.

Full recordings, presentations, interviews, and photo highlights are now available on the Cyprus Shipping News YouTube channel and website. The conversation continues in Hamburg at the 1st CSN North European Crewing Conference on 9 September, followed by the ICT Forums in Limassol and Athens this autumn.
