LS Marine Solution is set to commence construction on a submarine cable-laying vessel that will be the largest in Asia and rank among the top five globally in terms of size.

The company announced on June 30 that it had signed a final contract with Turkey’s Tersan Shipyard on June 28 for the construction of the submarine cable-laying vessel.

Through this contract, LS Marine Solution will begin building an ultra-large HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) cable-laying vessel with a cable loading capacity of 13,000 tons and a total weight of 18,800 tons. The vessel, which will be the largest in Asia and among the top five globally, will be equipped with high-specification equipment capable of simultaneously laying HVDC submarine cables and fiber optic cables.

Notably, the vessel is designed to minimize connection losses even in long-distance and deep-sea areas, optimizing its technical capabilities for HVDC power grid construction. Currently, there are only three vessels worldwide with similar specifications, and LS Marine Solution will be the only company in Korea to secure such capabilities.

LS Marine Solution plans to use the new cable-laying vessel to respond to domestic strategic projects such as the “West Coast HVDC Energy Highway,” as well as to meet the demand for offshore wind power and ultra-long-distance submarine network construction in Europe and North America.

The vessel is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2028 after about two years of construction. It will operate in conjunction with the LS GreenLink submarine cable factory in the United States, activating a global turnkey contract system that encompasses design, production, and construction.

Tersan Shipyard specializes in the construction of marine vessels, fishing boats, and special-purpose ships, and is recognized as having top-level expertise in Europe for building special-purpose vessels related to renewable energy. Their production infrastructure optimized for large special-purpose vessels and ability to meet delivery deadlines reliably were also key factors in the conclusion of this contract.
