Hanwha Ocean is accelerating its efforts to secure eco-friendly ship technology by strengthening cooperation with global classification societies.

Hanwha Ocean announced on June 4 that it has signed a total of three memorandums of understanding for eco-friendly technology cooperation with Korean Register , DNV of Norway, and others at the international shipping exhibition Nor-Shipping 2025 currently underway in Oslo, Norway.

Hanwha Ocean will collaborate with Korean Register to develop a 150,000 CBM (cubic meter) very large ammonia carrier. The plan is to lead the way in scaling up ammonia carriers in anticipation of increased ammonia transportation volumes in the future.

Currently, the largest ammonia carrier under construction has a capacity of 93,000 CBM. Ammonia is evaluated as a representative fuel to lead the zero-carbon era in the future as it does not emit carbon dioxide when burned. It is also considered the most economical means of hydrogen transportation at present, as it can be converted to hydrogen through a simple process.

Hanwha Ocean also signed a technical cooperation MOU with Korean Register to pursue design changes for the fore accommodation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. The company plans to maximize the utilization of rear space on ships and enhance the efficiency and stability of mooring and unloading operations by linking with forward mooring equipment.

With DNV of Norway, Hanwha Ocean will pursue technical cooperation related to MC-type fuel tanks. By developing technology to increase the vapor pressure limit of MC-type fuel tanks, they plan to optimize for “cold ironing” environments that utilize external power sources while ships are docked. Cold ironing is a method of using power supplied from land when a ship is docked at a port, turning off the ship’s generators.

A company official said, “Hanwha Ocean is accelerating the commercialization of eco-friendly ship technology through strategic collaborations with global classification societies and major partners,” adding, “We will increase technological reliability and lead international eco-friendly standards through the development of various joint projects.”
