Hanwha Group’s defense industry trio  announced on May 28 that they will operate the largest integrated exhibition hall within the International Maritime & Defense Exhibition , held at BEXCO in Busan from May 28-31.

The Hanwha defense trio will showcase a full lineup of maritime integrated solutions, ranging from future-oriented and export-ready naval vessels to unmanned systems and lithium-ion batteries. At MADEX, Hanwha Systems will unveil for the first time a combat unmanned surface vehicle, an advanced unmanned combat vessel designed to minimize human casualties in naval warfare and maximize troop efficiency. It is capable of optimized mission performance with suicide drone swarms and various armaments.

Hanwha Systems’ unmanned surface vehicle is the only one in Korea to possess technologies such as swarm operation, wave avoidance autonomous navigation, and integrated operation of manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) based on low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication.

Unlike reconnaissance unmanned surface vehicles developed for search and rescue and surveillance purposes, the combat unmanned surface vehicle’s “combat management system (CMS)” plays a crucial role. Hanwha Systems has independently developed and exported the CMS, which serves as the control tower for all sensors and weapons on naval vessels. Hanwha Systems plans to equip its combat unmanned surface vehicle with its superior combat system. A company official stated, “The combat unmanned surface vehicle is expected to incorporate Hanwha’s maritime defense technology, including Hanwha Systems’ unique combat system and MUM-T technology, Hanwha Ocean’s special vessel construction capabilities, and Hanwha Aerospace’s remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS) and guided missile launcher development capabilities.”

At this exhibition, Hanwha Systems will also showcase another maritime unmanned system, the suicide unmanned surface vehicle. Equipped with AI-based target detection and tracking capabilities, the suicide unmanned surface vehicle can form swarm formations to conduct simultaneous attacks on enemy vessels.
