Veson Nautical executive tells Geneva Dry conference that a strong data foundation is what enables organizations to gain a decision advantage with AI

 As the sheer volume of market signals and data today far exceeds what any human can reasonably process, there is no question that AI needs to be part of the solution. However, for AI to make a positive impact on maritime, data quality needs to be prioritized according to Emily Edwards, Vice President of Product for Data Intelligence at Veson Nautical, a global leader in maritime data and freight management solutions.

Speaking on the panel: ‘Digital Efficiency Drivers At Sea’ at the Geneva Dry 2025 conference, Edwards told delegates that the swift adoption AI could give companies some quick-fix solutions, but the real gamechanger lies in being able to process the huge volume of data to create a decision advantage.

“AI is not a quick fix or a cure-all that will solve every problem,” Edwards said. “It needs to be augmented with the right information to enable the shipping industry to create the right solutions in an extremely complex environment.”

Veson Nautical, a company that has been investing in its data strategy for years, is grounded in a data philosophy focused on three things: duplication of data sets for true validation, adding structure large data sets, and the ability to deliver data at the right time, with the right context.

During the panel discussion, Edwards added that a holistic approach to leveraging data was vital to a successful digital transition. She cited an initiative at Veson that is making it easier for our clients to share relevant data in real-time with their counterparties.

“The ability for operators to share real-time voyage and cargo updates with their charterers is a great example of what we are trying to achieve,” Edwards said. “[Veson] has a core fundamental belief that actionable data should underpin every decision.”

Edwards also highlighted the recent strategic technology agreement Veson has signed with Cargill,  which is providing Cargill with solutions that integrate proprietary data, supplier information, and customer insights to improve the experience that Cargill delivers its customers.

“The Cargill collaboration is an excellent example of how streamlining your technology ecosystem means faster, data-driven decisions for Cargill and the wider shipping industry,” Edwards concluded.
