Hanwha Ocean marked a significant milestone in its strategic expansion into the deep-sea drilling industry by holding a naming ceremony for its next-generation drillship at the Geoje shipyard.

The event was attended by key figures including Phillip Levy, President of Hanwha Ocean’s Marine Business Division; Renata Baruzzi, Director of Engineering, Technology, and Innovation at Petrobras; Rodrigo Ribeiro, CEO of Constellation; and Clayton Koan, CEO of Hanwha Drilling. This ceremony celebrated the launch of the drillship while underscoring Hanwha Ocean’s commitment to becoming a leading player in the marine energy market.

Renata Baruzzi had the honor of naming the new drillship “Tidal Action.” This state-of-the-art vessel is designed to operate in some of the most challenging environments on Earth. It boasts capabilities to drill at depths of up to 12 kilometers in waters as deep as 3.6 kilometers. Equipped with advanced technology such as a dynamic positioning system for stable hull positioning and blowout preventers for safe drilling operations, Tidal Action exemplifies Hanwha Ocean’s dedication to operational efficiency and safety standards.

The journey leading up to this moment began in February last year when Hanwha Ocean established Hanwha Drilling to independently manage its drillships. This strategic move was followed by forming a partnership with Constellation, a prominent Brazilian offshore drilling company. Through this collaboration, Constellation has secured a long-term charter contract with Brazil’s state-owned oil company Petrobras and is set to commence drilling operations in Brazilian waters later this year.

Phillip Levy highlighted the significance of this achievement by stating, “Delivering a world-class drillship and officially entering the offshore drilling business is a meaningful achievement, and we aim to grow as a leading company in the marine energy market based on our technological competitiveness and strategic vision.” His words reflect Hanwha Ocean’s ambition to transform into an EPCIO (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and Operation) solution provider within the marine business sector.
