The Cyprus Shipping Chamber held its annual dinner last night at the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel in Limassol, marking a significant event in the maritime industry’s calendar.

The evening began with an introductory speech by Alexis Joesphides, the Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber. Joesphides highlighted the Chamber’s achievements over the past year and outlined the strategic priorities for the upcoming year. He emphasised the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector to drive the industry forward.

“Our focus remains on enhancing the competitiveness of the Cyprus shipping industry, promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring the safety and security of maritime operations,” said Joesphides. “We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to achieve these goals and further elevate Cyprus’ position as a leading maritime hub.”

Following Joesphides, President Themis Papadopoulos of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber took the stage to welcome the guests and set the tone for the evening. Papadopoulos reflected on the industry’s resilience and the collective efforts that have sustained its growth despite global challenges.

“The Cyprus shipping industry has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability,” said Papadopoulos. “Tonight, we celebrate our achievements and look forward to a future filled with opportunities. Together, we will continue to build on our successes and address the challenges that lie ahead.”

The event was graced by the presence of President Nikos Christodoulides, who delivered a keynote speech highlighting the government’s unwavering support for the shipping sector and outlining the challenges and opportunities ahead.

President Christodoulides’ Address

In his speech, President Christodoulides emphasised the critical role of the shipping industry in Cyprus’ economy and its strategic importance on the global stage. He acknowledged the sector’s resilience and adaptability, especially in the face of recent geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

“The shipping industry is a cornerstone of our national economy, contributing significantly to our GDP and providing employment to thousands of Cypriots,” said President Christodoulides. “Our government remains committed to fostering an environment that supports the growth and sustainability of this vital sector.”

President Christodoulides highlighted the “challenging year ahead” for the shipping industry, citing factors such as fluctuating global trade dynamics, environmental regulations, and technological advancements. He stressed the need for continuous innovation and adaptation to remain competitive in the global market.

“We must embrace digital transformation and sustainable practices to ensure the long-term viability of our shipping industry,” he added. “Our government will continue to implement policies that promote transparency, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and enhance the overall competitiveness of our maritime sector.”

The President reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the shipping industry through various initiatives and reforms. He announced plans to introduce over 80 reforms and 60 online services aimed at streamlining administrative processes and improving efficiency.

“We are dedicated to creating a modern, digital Cyprus that is a model of transparency and accountability,” said Christodoulides. “Our vision for 2025 includes significant investments in infrastructure, education, and digital services to support the growth and sustainability of the shipping sector.”

Digital Transformation

A key focus of the President’s speech was the importance of digital transformation in the maritime industry. He highlighted the launch of the Digital Citizen mobile app, which allows citizens to obtain and store official documents in digital format, as a crucial step towards a more efficient and user-friendly state.

“The Digital Citizen app is part of our broader digital strategy to accelerate transformation and position Cyprus as a future-ready, knowledge-based economy,” said Christodoulides. “We urge organizations to prioritize the acceptance of digital ID documents, as we move towards making it mandatory.”

President Christodoulides also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to Thomas Kazakos, who is stepping down as Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber to take on the role of Director General of the International Chamber of Shipping.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Thomas Kazakos for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Cyprus Shipping Chamber,” said President Christodoulides. “Under his guidance, the Chamber has achieved significant milestones and strengthened its position as a key player in the global maritime industry. We wish him all the best in his new role and are confident that he will continue to make valuable contributions to the international shipping community.”
