The impact of carbon capture and digital technologies as well as IMO Mid-Term Measures and FuelEU on the cost of compliance led the discussion at the ABS Middle East Regional Committee Meeting.

The committee welcomed Khalid Alhammad, President of Bahri Ship Management, who started his term as chairman of the ABS Middle East Regional Committee.

The committee was briefed on major market trends including the energy transition and digital transformation. There was an update on alternative fuels, including the latest research on advanced nuclear reactor technologies and the emergence and growth of methanol and ammonia. The members also heard the latest news from the IMO on greenhouse gas reduction targets as well as a primer on how fleet pooling can support compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations. In the offshore sector, ABS is the market leader in the Middle East with a number one position in the existing fleet for exploration, production and support vessels.

In his farewell message, Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Logistics & Services and outgoing chairman, reflected on his tenure: “Serving in this role has been an honor and a privilege, one that has allowed me to work with some of the brightest minds in our industry.
