Gasum bunkers Equinor’s tugboats Borgøy and Bokn with bio-LNG

The agreement is part of the continuing collaboration between Gasum and Equinor around increasing use of bio-LNG.

Gasum is bunkering Norway-based global energy company Equinor’s tugboats Borgøy and Bokn with bio-LNG throughout 2025. The first bunkering of the vessel Borgøy was successfully carried out at Kårstø on 14 February.

This latest agreement is a further extension of the continuing collaboration between Gasum and Equinor. Both Gasum and Equinor are committed to ambitious sustainability goals to enable a cleaner energy future in the maritime sector. Equinor’s goal is to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050.

In 2024 Gasum supplied bio-LNG to Equinor’s chartered platform supply vessel, Island Crusader, in the Port of Dusavik, Stavanger. Expanding the use of bio-LNG to the fuel of choice for powering these tugboats is another step on the journey towards Equinor’s sustainability goals.

Fully renewable maritime fuel

Liquefied biogas, or Bio-LNG, is a fully renewable, highly versatile fuel with life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions that are, on average, 90% lower when compared with traditional fossil fuels. Gasum produces biogas from waste feedstocks such as biowaste, sewage sludge, manure and other industrial and agricultural side streams.

LNG and bio-LNG are fully interchangeable. They can also be mixed at any ratio. Gasum is able provide bio-LNG bunkering services to all shipping companies that have vessels running on liquefied natural gas.

Gasum’s goal is to offer 7 TWh of renewable gas to its customers yearly by 2027. Achieving this goal would mean combined carbon dioxide reduction of 1.8 million tons per year for Gasum’s customers.
