Hanwha Ocean, a prominent South Korean shipbuilding company, successfully delivered a large offshore wind turbine installation vessel to Cadeler, a global offshore wind specialist company. This delivery, which occurred approximately one month ahead of the original schedule, marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two companies and underscores the growing importance of offshore wind energy in the global renewable energy landscape.

The WTIV, ordered by Cadeler in 2021, is a testament to Hanwha Ocean’s advanced shipbuilding capabilities. Measuring 148 meters in length and 56 meters in width, the vessel is equipped to lift up to 2,600 tons and can transport and install five 15 MW class large offshore wind turbines simultaneously. Its ability to install turbine-related equipment in waters up to 65 meters deep makes it a critical asset for the construction of offshore wind farms, which are essential for expanding renewable energy infrastructure.

Philip Levy, head of Hanwha Ocean’s Marine Business Division (president), highlighted the strategic approach taken to achieve the early delivery. “To achieve early delivery, we formed a one-team with the client from the start of the sea trial phase, minimizing the time taken from issue resolution to execution, thereby enhancing both work efficiency and quality,” he stated. This collaborative effort between Hanwha Ocean and Cadeler exemplifies the synergy required to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving renewable energy sector.

The newly delivered WTIV is set to commence its first operation at the Changhua offshore wind farm in Taiwan. This project is a significant component of Taiwan’s efforts to increase its renewable energy capacity and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The Changhua offshore wind farm is part of a broader initiative to transition towards cleaner energy sources, aligning with global trends aimed at combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions.

To date, Hanwha Ocean has successfully delivered a total of three WTIVs, with an additional vessel currently under construction and expected to be delivered by the end of this year. This achievement solidifies Hanwha Ocean’s position as a leader in the domestic shipbuilding industry, holding the largest order and construction record for WTIVs among South Korean shipbuilders.

The delivery of this WTIV not only highlights the technological advancements and expertise of Hanwha Ocean but also reflects the increasing investment in renewable energy sources worldwide. As countries strive to enhance their renewable energy infrastructure, the role of specialized vessels like WTIVs becomes ever more critical in supporting the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
