Asso.SubSea introduces Althea: A new era in cable laying excellence

Asso.subsea is thrilled to announce the official contract signing for the construction of its groundbreaking new DP-2 Cable Laying Vessel, to be named Althea. Purpose-built to excel in all types of challenging environments, including shallow waters and intertidal zones, the Althea will mark a pivotal advancement in sustainable and versatile subsea operations. She will be built at the prestigious China Merchants Heavy Industry shipyard, at the Mazhou Island site in Shenzen, a shipyard known for its proven expertise in construction of specialized offshore and subsea tonnage. The delivery date for Althea is set for the 2nd quarter of 2027.
Why Althea Stands Out
Unmatched cable handling capacity
With the ability to manage up to 12,000 tons of cable in 1, 2 or 3 carousel divisions, the Althea will be able to support multi-section operations, enabling seamless bundled cable laying with precision and efficiency.
Mastering shallow water challenges
Capable of operating at draughts as light as 4.5 meters in full DP-2 mode with a cable payload of more than 50% of her maximum capacity, and designed for beaching in intertidal zones, the Althea will offer unparalleled access to areas beyond the reach of conventional cable laying vessels.
Advanced positioning capabilities and redundancy
Featuring nine thrusters, powered by a diesel-electric plant under a 3-section split bus bar philosophy, and four spud-cans for positioning in shallow water, the Altheaensures superior station-keeping capabilities and redundancy for reliable performance both in deep and shallow-water environments.
Sustainability built in
Equipped with a hybrid diesel and battery power generation plant, methanol-ready engines capable of running on bio-fuels and complying with IMO Tier III NOx emission standards, cold ironing capabilities and with a number of energy saving features, the Althea will set new benchmarks for eco-friendly marine operations.
Comfort beyond expectations
With an accommodation capability for 120 people, the Althea will provide modern, high-standard welfare facilities to support extended projects in remote locations of the world.
With its cutting-edge technology and environmentally conscious design, the Althea is set to empower clients to overcome challenges and achieve success in even the most demanding environments.
