HD Hyundai Marine Solutions introduces AI-based ‘OceanWise’ for domestic vessels

HD Hyundai Marine Solutions has taken a significant step forward in the maritime industry by announcing the application of its AI-based optimal route solution, “OceanWise,” to domestic shipping company vessels for the first time. This development follows a recent contract signed to supply OceanWise to some vessels of SK Shipping and Hyundai Glovis, as announced on Jan. 24. The solution, which leverages big data and AI algorithms, is designed to suggest optimal routes that minimize fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the industry’s growing focus on sustainability and operational efficiency.
The practical utility of OceanWise was initially verified through a business agreement with HD Hyundai Oilbank since April of the previous year. Performance tests conducted over 13 routes, covering a total of 106,000 km, demonstrated an average fuel saving of 5.3%. This translates to a significant fuel cost reduction of approximately 350 million won for a vessel consuming 10,000 tons of fuel annually. To enhance the accuracy and objectivity of these tests, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions employed the twin ship verification method for the first time globally. This innovative approach involves operating a comparative control vessel on the same route simultaneously and swapping captains in the next segment, thereby eliminating biases and increasing the reliability of the data collected.
A company official emphasized the importance of building trust in OceanWise, stating, “Securing the trust of shippers and shipowners in OceanWise through demonstration was a decisive factor in this supply contract.” The company is committed to making OceanWise the standard for decarbonization solutions in the future ship market, with plans to expand its application regardless of vessel type and size. Additionally, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions intends to launch subscription-based products to further grow the market for OceanWise.
