HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that it held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Peruvian vessel project at the Peruvian state-owned SIMA shipyard in Callao, Peru, on Jan. 10 (local time). This significant event marks the commencement of construction for four vessels of three types: a frigate, an offshore patrol vessel, and a landing ship, which are part of a defense export contract worth approximately $640.6 million secured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in April last year.

The ceremony was attended by high-profile Peruvian officials, including President Dina Boluarte, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén Olaya, Minister of Defense Walter Astudillo, Chief of Naval Staff Luis Jose Polar Figari, and Chief of Naval Operations Cesar Ernesto Colunge Pinto. Representing HD Hyundai Heavy Industries was Joo Won-ho, head of the special ship business.

The construction began with traditional steel cutting and keel laying ceremonies, symbolizing the start of the shipbuilding process. These vessels are set to become key strategic assets for the Peruvian Navy, enhancing its capabilities and modernizing its fleet.

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This groundbreaking ceremony will be a very important milestone in the history of Peruvian shipbuilding.” She further added, “We expect this project with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to promote the modernization of the Peruvian Navy and contribute to the growth of the national economy.”

Joo Won-ho echoed these sentiments, highlighting the broader implications of the project. “This groundbreaking ceremony marks the beginning of the entry of K-vessels into Latin America,” he said. “We will strive to successfully carry out this project based on technology and trust, thereby strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries.”

The vessels are scheduled to be delivered sequentially to the Peruvian Navy starting in 2026. They will be constructed locally using the facilities of the SIMA shipyard, with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries providing advanced design technology and shipbuilding process know-how. This collaboration is expected to serve as a model case for future overseas expansion of the K-defense industry.

The Peruvian vessel project is a testament to the growing partnership between Peru and South Korea. It reflects the strategic importance of modernizing the Peruvian Navy in the context of regional security and economic growth.
