Samsung Heavy Industries announced  that it has signed a construction contract with an Asian shipowner for three ultra-large ethane carriers worth 742.2 billion won. These vessels are scheduled to be delivered sequentially to the shipowner by December 2027. This significant contract marks another milestone for Samsung Heavy Industries, contributing to its cumulative order intake for this year, which now amounts to approximately $7.3 billion (10.6 trillion won for a total of 36 vessels), achieving 75% of its annual target of $9.7 billion.

The new orders include a diverse range of ship types: 22 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, 2 very large ammonia carriers (VLAC), 1 shuttle tanker, 4 medium tankers, 4 container ships, and 3 very large ethane carriers (VLEC). Notably, eco-friendly fuel vessels such as LNG and ammonia carriers account for 86% (31 vessels) of the total contracted ships, reflecting a growing trend in the maritime industry towards sustainable shipping solutions.

A Samsung Heavy Industries official commented on this trend, stating, “The trend of ordering eco-friendly fuel-propelled ships to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is steadily increasing.” The official further emphasized the company’s strategic focus, adding, “Given our strengths in eco-friendly technology development, we will actively respond to changes in the market environment.”
