The European Union (EU), together with its partners Enabel, UN-Habitat, TradeMark Africa, and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International, have signed a project agreement to enhance the performance of the Port of Dar es Salaam.

Witnessed by government officials, including representatives from the Tanzania Ports Authority, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Transport, this project embodies the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, and it aims to modernize critical transport infrastructure, improve efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness while contributing to Tanzania’s broader development goals.

The signing ceremony took place during the visit of Mr. Hans Stausboll, Director for Africa at the European Commission. His visit is part of a broader high-level mission, which included participation in the EU-Government of Tanzania Partnership Dialogue held on December 10.

The Tanzania Trade and Transport Improvement Project, set to launch in early 2025, has a budget of TZS 41.91 billion (EUR 15 million). It will be implemented by Enabel, UN-Habitat, TradeMark Africa, and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International.

The project focuses on optimizing port operations by addressing operational bottlenecks, enhancing safety and environmental sustainability. It also promotes trade facilitation measures, reducing non-tariff barriers to trade and improving customs procedures. In addition, the initiative supports Tanzania’s transition to a low-carbon transport system, particularly through the promotion of electric mobility.

He added: “The EU’s Global Gateway strategy focuses on enhancing infrastructure that is smart, clean, and secure. This project embodies those principles, ensuring Tanzania is better positioned to meet the demands of regional and international trade while advancing green and inclusive development.”

The Port of Dar es Salaam is vital to Tanzania’s economy, handling 95% of the country’s international trade and serving as a gateway for landlocked neighbours such as Zambia, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The improvements under this project are expected to enhance the port’s performance, reduce the time and costs of clearing and transporting goods, and support Tanzania’s transition towards a low-carbon transport system for both goods and people.

This agreement exemplifies the strong partnership between the EU and Tanzania, rooted in a shared vision of modernizing trade infrastructure, boosting regional connectivity, and driving sustainable economic growth.
