Approval in Principle Granted for 8,000 TEU-Class Container Ship, Showcasing Advanced Technology

HD Hyundai has taken a significant step forward in maritime technology by successfully demonstrating the integration of autonomous navigation and remote control on a large container ship. The company held a ceremony on Nov. 27 at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, to commemorate the approval in principle (AIP) for this groundbreaking achievement.

The demonstration involved an 8,000 TEU-class container ship, showcasing the application of autonomous navigation and remote control technology. HD Hyundai announced on Nov. 28 that it had obtained approval in principle (AIP) from the Korean Register (KR) and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), marking a crucial milestone in the commercialisation of Level 3 autonomous navigation.

Level 3 autonomous navigation represents a significant advancement in maritime technology, allowing for remote control without crew members on board. This development is particularly important for the container shipping industry, which plays a vital role in global trade by transporting a substantial portion of the world’s goods.

HD Hyundai’s successful demonstration included the use of Avikus’ autonomous navigation solution “HiNAS Control” and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering’s remote control solution. These technologies manage remote steering, speed control, communication delays, unexpected situations, and cyber threats, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of large vessels.

One of the most notable aspects of the demonstration was the world’s first successful transfer of control authority between multiple remote operation centers (ROC) for large commercial vessels. Control authority was transferred between the Integrated Digital Control Center at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and the Digital Convergence Center at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. This capability ensures the continuity of remote navigation during long-distance routes, enhancing the reliability and safety of autonomous operations.

An HD Hyundai representative emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “This certification has laid a crucial foundation for the commercialization of autonomous navigation and remote control technology.” The representative also highlighted the company’s commitment to leading the international standardization of autonomous navigation technology by proactively responding to global institutions and regulations, such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The successful demonstration and certification from KR and LISCR validate the reliability and safety of HD Hyundai’s technology. These certifications are essential for ensuring compliance with international standards and gaining the trust of the global maritime industry.
