Samsung Heavy Industries launched the “Shift Auto,” a mission-based research vessel equipped with fully autonomous navigation functions from the design stage, in a ceremony on Nov. 21. This innovative vessel, designed to accommodate 12 passengers, is optimized for autonomous navigation research with a catamaran structure that minimizes hull shaking. The catamaran is renowned for its low vibration and excellent stability, making it ideal for research purposes.

The Shift Auto is also equipped with Samsung Electronics’ Internet of Things (IoT) system, SmartThings, which ensures reliability and safety in data collection. This integration of IoT technology enhances the vessel’s functionality, providing a robust platform for autonomous navigation research.

Traditionally, autonomous vessels have been limited to specific demonstrations such as obstacle identification and detour guidance. However, the Shift Auto represents a significant advancement in this field. It incorporates various autonomous navigation technologies from the design stage, including automatic docking and undocking, and voice-based control. This comprehensive integration makes future technology development more scalable and versatile.

A Samsung Heavy Industries official stated, “Through Shift Auto, we will demonstrate ‘mission-based fully autonomous navigation’ technology that performs automatic docking, autonomous navigation, and anchoring without crew intervention. We plan to develop it into an integrated autonomous navigation platform incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT technologies.”

The development of the Shift Auto aligns with global trends in maritime technology, which emphasize automation and smart shipping solutions. These trends are driven by the need for greater efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability in the shipping industry. Autonomous navigation technology, which utilizes artificial intelligence, sensors, and other advanced technologies, enables vessels to navigate and operate without human intervention. This includes capabilities such as obstacle detection, route planning, and automatic docking.
