~ Sharing the Preciousness of Our Oceans With Future Generations～

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that in cooperation with the nonprofit organization Team Kujira-go(Note 1) , it held a marine debris survey event at the Fujimae tideland (Note 2) in Nagoya on Sunday, November 3. Along with experts from Team Kujira-go, event participants collected and surveyed marine plastic waste and other debris to gain a deeper appreciation of the need to preserve and protect the marine environment.

The event brought together the director of the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium who have worked with MOL in a study of the migration patterns of loggerhead turtles (Note 3) , members of the ASAHI INTECC・LOVELEDGE NAGOYA women’s soccer team(Note 4) co-sponsored by MOL and some local residents, 31 people (18 adults and 13 children). The participants collected microplastics under the guidance of experts and learned about marine environmental issues from specific gravity experiments and microscopic observations of collected microplastic waste, and from lectures by experts. They presented the results of their experiments and their impressions throughout the event.

MOL will continue its activities to convey the importance of the ocean to future generations.

(Note 1) A non-profit organization that conducts marine debris survey activities on beaches, such as the Umino Kankyo Shirabe-tai (Marine Environment Survey Team), inviting children join in to help them learn about global warming and marine environmental issues.

(Note 2) A tidal flat straddling Nagoya City’s Minato Ward and Tobishima Village in Kaifu-gun, Aichi Prefecture. The area is a stopover site for migratory birds, and is registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland.
