LS Cable & System has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Norwegian integrated energy company Equinor for the world’s largest floating offshore wind project. The signing ceremony took place at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Gwangju on Nov. 6.

Equinor plans to establish a 750-megawatt (MW) capacity floating offshore wind farm by 2030, approximately 70 kilometers off the coast of Ulsan. Floating offshore wind turbines are installed on floating structures rather than being fixed to the seabed, allowing for power generation in deep waters. This method is gaining traction globally as coastal installation spaces become scarce.

The government recently announced plans to auction a total of 2.5 to 3 gigawatts (GW) of floating offshore wind capacity by 2026. Last month, it allocated 500 MW specifically for floating offshore wind in its first fixed-price contract auction for wind power.

LS Cable & System has developed South Korea’s first dynamic submarine cable for floating offshore wind. Dynamic cables require advanced technology to withstand high waves and strong currents while reliably transmitting power. Only a few companies worldwide have successfully developed such technology.
