Rapid Emergence of Screen and Hinge Problems Raises Quality Concerns

Huawei, one of China’s leading technology companies, has recently unveiled the world’s first ‘triple-fold’ smartphone, the MateXT. However, the innovative device, which can be folded twice, is already facing significant durability issues just weeks after its release.

At the MateXT’s launch, Charlie Wei, executive director of Huawei, proudly stated, “It took five years to achieve technological innovation in the fields of screens and hinges,” highlighting the company’s dedication to developing the TianGong hinge system installed in the MateXT. Despite these claims, the smartphone’s durability has come under scrutiny.

Huawei officially started selling the MateXT on Sept. 20. However, on Oct.. 2, videos of the MateXT being damaged began circulating on Chinese video platform Bilibili and social media, drawing widespread attention. The videos show the MateXT with a thick black line at the hinge where the screen folds and a broken display, raising concerns about the device’s longevity.

Unlike Samsung’s foldable smartphones, which use an in-folding structure, the MateXT employs an out-folding design, where the flexible display is exposed. This design choice has led to increased concerns about the device’s durability, especially given the rapid emergence of issues.

The MateXT’s high price point further exacerbates the controversy. The 1TB version of the MateXT is priced at 23,999 yuan (approximately 4.53 million won), while the cheapest 256GB version costs 19,999 yuan (approximately 3.77 million won). Consumers who have invested in this premium device are understandably disappointed by the early signs of wear and tear.

The significance of the hinge mechanism in foldable smartphones cannot be overstated. Huawei’s claim of a five-year development period for their TianGong hinge system underscores the technical challenges involved. The durability issues faced by the MateXT highlight the importance of hinge design and its impact on the overall functionality of foldable devices.

Consumer expectations for high-cost technology products are naturally elevated, and the MateXT’s premium pricing sets a high bar for quality and durability.
