The Cyprus Shipping Chamber joins today, 26 September 2024, the International Shipping Community to celebrate the “World Maritime Day”, which has been established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), to focus attention on the importance of maritime safety, maritime security and the marine environment.

The “World Maritime Day” theme for 2024, is “Navigating the future: safety first!”. The theme highlights the IMO’s and Shipping Industry’s, efforts to enhance maritime safety and security while protecting the marine environment. It underscores the importance of ensuring that the IMO’s regulatory framework keeps pace with rapid technological advancements and innovations while addressing the safety implications of emerging technologies, alternative fuels, and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships, all aimed at maintaining or improving the safety and efficiency of Shipping to support the smooth flow of global maritime trade.

The 2024 theme also resonates deeply with the Cyprus Shipping Chamber’s mission, to “Navigate Cyprus Worldwide” and ensure that the Cyprus Shipping Industry is well supported so that Cyprus can continue to be a leading and high standard maritime hub globally.

The Chamber held its Monthly Members Meeting, on 25 September 2024, on the occasion of “World Maritime Day”, reflecting on the IMO’s Secretary General message and followed by a presentation from Ms. Cecilia Müller Torbrand, CEO of Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN), entitled “Fighting corruption in the maritime industry – are we loosing or winning?”. In her presentation, Ms. Torbrand addressed the ongoing challenges and successes in the fight against corruption within the maritime sector. Also, the Chamber participated at a Beach Cleaning initiative held as part of the celebrations for World Maritime Day by the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA), in Limassol.
