Doosan Enerbility announced on September 12 that it will pursue a national project to localize super-large wind power systems in collaboration with four public power companies and specialized small and medium-sized wind power enterprises. This initiative marks a significant step in South Korea’s renewable energy transition, aiming to bolster the domestic wind power market and reduce reliance on foreign technology.

In May, Doosan Enerbility signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation on the national project with Korea Offshore Wind Power, Korea East-West Power, Korea Southern Power, and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, along with five small and medium-sized enterprises. This collaboration is part of the “2nd New Renewable Energy R&D New Support Target Research and Development Project” organized by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) under the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy.

The project focuses on developing 10MW-class wind turbine technology, with the goal of increasing the localization rate of components to 70% by next year. Demonstrations in connection with offshore wind public complexes are planned after 2027. As the lead company, Doosan Enerbility will oversee the overall design, assembly, installation, and demonstration of these advanced wind turbines.

These turbines are specifically designed for Korea’s low wind speed environment, featuring a rotor diameter of 205 meters and blade length of 100 meters. They are capable of generating more than 30% utilization even at an average wind speed of 6.5 meters per second. Doosan Enerbility plans to invest over 50 billion KRW in research and development and factory expansion, participating in component reliability testing and the development of automated equipment.

Son Seung-woo, head of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Service BG, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This project will be an opportunity for Korean super-large offshore wind turbines to secure competitiveness in terms of quality, cost, and delivery time.” He added, “We will strengthen the foundation of energy security in the domestic wind power market, where foreign wind turbines are aggressively entering, and take the lead in revitalizing the domestic wind power ecosystem.”

The participating companies are also considering involvement in large-scale offshore wind farm development projects currently underway in the country. This initiative aligns with South Korea’s broader energy policy goals, which include increasing renewable energy adoption, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering green technology innovation.
