Bloomberg reported on July 28 (local time), citing sources, that Apple initially planned to release the new iPhone operating system iOS 18 and iPad OS 18 in September and distribute the AI feature as part of a software update a few weeks later in October. The release date for the iPhone 16 is still expected to be in September, but the first models delivered to consumers this year are likely to lack the new AI features.

Apple plans to allow software developers to use Apple Intelligence for initial testing through the beta versions of iOS 18.1 and iPad OS 18.1 as early as this week, Bloomberg added. It is unusual for Apple to release new software to developers before the official launch, but this move is seen as a way to secure more time to fix bugs. “Apple missed the timing for the iPhone and iPad software overhaul to include AI features, but it has secured more time to fix bugs,” Bloomberg stated.
