As part of a comprehensive agreement with Akita Prefecture,* NYK will donate 1 million yen to a project to reconstruct a fisheries hatchery run by Daisen City, where salmon have been hatched and released for over 100 years.

Currently, there are five salmon hatcheries in Akita Prefecture releasing 20 million fry each year to support the prefecture’s coastal fisheries. The Daisen City hatchery has a 129-year history and is the only hatchery in the inland area, releasing 2.4 million fry every year.

To secure sustainable salmon resources in Japan, it is necessary to improve the return rate of salmon by raising large fry that can adapt to the recent changes in ocean currents and to improve the function of the current aging hatchery.

Through this donation to the hatchery renovation project, which includes securing abundant groundwater necessary for fry rearing, installing a flotation tank that enables integrated rearing from eggs to fry, and developing in-house power generation facilities, NYK will contribute to the conservation of Japan’s fishery resources, harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and the inheritance of a traditional salmon culture and the revitalization of the region.
