HD Hyundai has begun fostering human resources for the development of the Korean and US shipbuilding industries.

HD Hyundai recently announced that HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), an intermediate holding company of HD Hyundai Group in the shipbuilding sector, signed an MOU with the University of Michigan in the United States and Seoul National University (SNU) to foster talent for the shipbuilding industry in a ceremony in the United States on July 22 (local time).

The ceremony, held at Macomb Community College in Macomb, Michigan of the United States was attended by Dr. Shin Jong-kye, a technical advisor to HD HHI, Dr. Jonathan Page, a professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering, and U.S. government officials, including US Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and Michigan Governor Gretchen E. Whitmer.

Under the agreement, HD Hyundai and SNU will explore educational cooperation with the University of Michigan including joint research, education, and internship programs. They are also considering expanding the scope of cooperation to other universities and colleges in the United States including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Virginia Tech.

The agreement was made after Secretary of State Carlos del Toro visited HD HHI’s Ulsan headquarters in February to observe HD’s shipbuilding capabilities firsthand and requested collaboration with HD HHI.

“The Korea-US educational cooperation in shipbuilding will not only boost the competitiveness of the U.S. shipbuilding industry, but also have a positive effect on future business cooperation between the two countries such as Korean shipbuilder’s MRO services for U.S. ships,” said Shin Jong-kye. “We will strive to play a pivotal role in the development of both countries’ shipbuilding industries based on our technology and experience.”
