The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA), as the governing body of the Panama Ship Registry, expresses its awareness of the events that have affected Panamanian-flagged vessels in recent days.

The newly built container ship Maersk Frankfurt suffered an explosion and fire while sailing in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India.

The skipper reports that there is a body on the lashing bridge, but it is impossible to reach it because of the flames. The Indian authorities are focusing their efforts on fighting the fire and ensuring the safety of the ship and crew.

Fortunately, the ship suffered no damage and was able to continue its journey safely with the entire crew.

In view of the attacks by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, the PMA’s General Directorate of Merchant Marine has issued a “MMN 03/2024 Warning to Merchant Marine”, recommending that Panamanian-flagged ships sailing through the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Aden and the surrounding areas increase security measures to the utmost and sail with maximum precautions.
The PMA actively monitors both issues through its relevant offices.

The institution provides maximum support to the authorities investigating the events and to the ship owners involved.
