In the first quarter of this year, the ranking of the Portuguese flag in the Paris MoU improved further. This means that very few ships flying the Portuguese flag were detained in ports due to non-compliance with international maritime safety and environmental regulations. In comparison with other relevant flag states, Portugal achieves a top score.

Wilhelm Loskot, Managing Director of EUROMAR, the exclusive agent of MAR, the International Shipping Register of Madeira (Portugal), comments:

“We are very pleased with the current positive developments in the Paris MoU Annual Report. Portugal has moved up four ranks, overtaking non-European registries such as the Marshall Islands, Liberia and Antigua & Barbuda.”

“We assume that if these positive developments continue, as they did in the first quarter of this year, Portugal will rise again in the ranking of the Paris MoU White List in the following year. This means that Portugal, and therefore the Madeira Shipping Register, will remain an attractive choice for quality minded shipowners.”

“These positive developments are due to the great efforts of all parties involved: shipowners, ship managers, classification societies, authorities in Portugal, but also due to the constant monitoring and evaluation of the key performance figures by EUROMAR.”

The member states of the European harmonized system of Port State Control regime (Paris Memorandum of Understanding – Paris MoU) are committed to standardised inspections in European ports to ensure compliance with international maritime safety regulations for ships of all flags.

Almost all of the merchant ships operating under the Portuguese flag are registered in the International Shipping Register of Madeira (MAR).
