APM Terminals Callao has invested more than USD 5 million in decarbonisation initiatives since 2021 and is actively contributing to the the company’s industry-leading, global ambition to be net-zero by 2040. APM Terminals Callao is on track to achieve a 36% reduction in emissions by 2024, 55% by 2030 and 100% by 2040.

Its decarbonisation initiatives support the company’s global decarbonisation strategy which includes the use of renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency and equipment electrification.

As a first step, the electricity used in its Peruvian operations is now sourced from 100% renewable energy sources. The organisation currently holds an international renewable energy certificate.

To improve energy efficiency, key initiatives include an investment of USD 500,000 in 2021 to change lighting fixtures in the yard to LED technology. This reduced lighting energy consumption by 33%.

In 2022, Arlonas-type grain unloading equipment was electrified. An investment of USD 120,000, made it possible to eliminate the use of diesel fuel and replace it with a renewable electricity.

APM Terminals Callao has planned a gradual transition of its container handling equipment from fossil fuels to 100% electric.

In doing so we are improving the environment in and around the port, helping promote decarbonisation and setting a benchmark for other ports in the country.”
