CSC strongly welcomes EU’s Operation ASPIDES

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber strongly welcomes the official launch of EU’s defensive maritime security operation in the Red Sea, dubbed operation “ASPIDES.”

“ASPIDES,” launched on 19 February 2024, has a defensive mandate, and will accompany and protect commercial vessels in the area against possible attacks at sea.

The escalating situation puts our seafarers in daily danger and is increasingly impacting Europe’s supply chain and overall economic security.

Protecting key shipping routes and the international principle of freedom of navigation is essential to guarantee the energy, food, and supply chain of Europe.

European presence in the area addressing security concerns and keeping our seafarers safe is essential, while we also support all coordinated efforts -including diplomatic action aimed at de-escalating the crisis.
