On January 26, NYK agreed to provide oceanographic information, such as wind direction and speed collected by NYK-operated vessels, to the Japan Coast Guard through the IoS Open Platform (IoS-OP) services provided by Ship Data Center Co., Ltd. (ShipDC). The IoS-OP is a platform for sharing data within the maritime industry on vessels operated by Japanese shipping companies. The Japan Coast Guard will use the provided data to improve the accuracy of its sea-current forecasts around Japan, contributing to safer ship navigation.

IoS-OP is an open platform through which ship-operation data provided by Japanese shipping companies are stored by ShipDC at its onshore data center and shared among shipping companies, shipyards, marine-equipment manufacturers, information and communication manufacturers, and other stakeholders in the maritime industry according to common rules. NYK has been a core member of the IoS-OP consortium since its launch and has been providing oceanographic information collected by SIMS*, a ship-performance monitoring system installed on approximately 200 NYK-operated vessels.

NYK has also been providing the Japan Coast Guard with oceanographic information individually without IoS-OP but will now share data through IoS-OP. The Japan Coast Guard will be able to access oceanographic information collected by approximately 500 vessels operated by NYK, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. Tidal current information predicted by the Japan Coast Guard will be made available to the public through the MSIL, a marine condition display system. NYK will continue to actively participate in the collection, distribution, and utilization of data in the maritime industry through IoS-OP, contributing to safer ship navigation.
